CASSIE & RIO
NOT SIMPLY PET FOOD.
Each year we find good homes for hundreds of animals in need, some are old, sick or neglected, so when a dog like Cassie the Golden Retriever comes through our doors, we know there is little hope of ever finding her a new family to live with. Our staff soon got Cassie cleaned up but after spending 9 years of her life outside in a garden she was nervous and timid and the kennels can be a noisy intimidating environment, so she stayed in reception where we could keep a constant eye on her and make her feel at home. One morning, along with some other recently rescued dogs, came Rio , a 13 year old Labrador cross. He was a friendly dog who was originally found wondering the streets and like Cassie was not in the best of health. Sue, who works in reception, had no hesitation in suggesting he too needed special care and introduced him to Cassie. Over the next few days Rio and Cassie got on great together, and it was a joy to see them having fun and enjoying each others company after living most of their lives alone and in less than perfect conditions, but everyone at the centre new their futures didn’t look good. Many older animals can end up staying in the centre for years as most people, understandably, look for young or middle aged dogs. We sometimes spend weeks or months nursing sick animals back to health and then spend longer trying to find them suitable homes, so when a lady called in and asked about Cassie, Sue was eager to talk to her. After a long chat, she decided that Cassie should be given a new home and spend her remaining days with a loving family. What an unexpected result, everyone was so pleased, everyone except Rio . He looked up from behind the reception desk, and for a minute no one spoke. ”You wouldn’t consider taking two dogs would you?” Said Sue. The lady listened to Rio ’s story, but taking on two old dogs was quite a commitment, and reluctantly the lady decided she just couldn’t manage it, considering the care both may need in the future. Paula, our manager, saw a chance of saving both dogs and wasn’t going to give up so easily. ”Instead of adopting just Cassie, why don’t you foster Rio as well, that way the Centre would help with his care?” The lady agreed it would be a perfect way to keep the dogs together. They both moved in with their new family and are loving every moment, they don’t bounce around quite as much as puppies, but they seem to be making up for all those lost years. So when you next donate £1 to the RSPCA in Godshill, you won’t be simply paying for some pet food, you could become a small part of Cassie and Rio’s life story. Every penny donated to the RSPCA in Godshill stays on the Island - We receive no financial support from head office or any other mainland sources. CASSIE RIO
